FAQs

Can I buy base bikes in a bike shop?

Ride Union Bike Co. in Aldgate, SA, will be stocking base bikes from launch. These guys are our local bike store and a great option for those who prefer to buy from a bricks and mortar store. If you'd like to test ride a bike, we recommend calling them ahead of time to make sure they will have the model in stock.

However, we are primarily an online outfit. You can purchase base bikes from our website and they will arrive on your doorstep with only minor assembly needed. We provide all the tools and instructions you need. We also offer free 100 day easy returns, just in case it's not quite right.

Where are base bikes based(!)?

We're proud to say base bikes is Australian owned and operated.

We are based in South Australia in the stunning Adelaide Hills (surrounded by awesome mountain biking territory and wonderful family cycling trails).

What do you think about kids bike lessons?

Formal teaching can be a great way to get your little one up and riding safely and with confidence.

Ride a bike right is a local (Adelaide) bike school that offers a variety of lessons including online courses. They even have base bikes in their bike fleet!

What do I do if I have a technical question?

Your first option is to check out the owner's manual that came with your bike, which can also be found further down this page.

For everything else, call us or reach out to us at contactus@basebikes.com.au and be sure to include a photo and / or video with a clear description of the issue.

What happens if I have a problem with the bike?

Firstly, call us! We're here to help, we back our bikes, and we care about customer service.

We provide a five year warranty on the frame and fork and a two year warranty for all other components. This excludes normal wear and tear items such as brake pads and cables. If you are outside of warranty, still call us, we may still be able to help.

All our bikes use high quality and replaceable components, so sourcing spare parts is easy, either through us or from any major bike retailer.

If the bike needs an adjustment or repair that is the result of a defect, we will usually ask you to pop to your local bike store and we will pay them directly. Please call us first however, and we will work with you and your local bike store to make sure it gets sorted.

Please also refer to our Warranty Policy.

Are training wheels available for base bikes?

Training wheels can be fitted to base 16. However, we believe that teaching kids to ride a bike starts with balance. It's the trickiest part of riding, and training wheels actually make it harder to learn. This can be especially true where there is uneven terrain.

That's why our bikes don't come with training wheels.

Instead, we recommend a simple method: removing the pedals (or don't install them in the first place) and let the child learn balance by using the bike like a balance bike. Be sure to set the seat height so that their heels are on the ground and they can run freely while sitting on the bike. With a little time, they'll soon be coasting along with their feet up, which is considered the best way for a child to learn to ride. This method creates less tears and more smiles by safely teaching balance, and avoids the sometimes nasty transition when training wheels are removed.

However, if you feel that your child would really benefit from having training wheels, standard training wheels available from most bike retails can be purchased separately and attached at the rear axle of the base 16.

The product is out of stock. When can I order it?

If an item is listed as 'SOLD OUT - NOTIFY ME WHEN IT'S AVAILABLE', it means we currently have no stock and the date for freight arrival is not yet confirmed. Click on the 'SOLD OUT' button and enter your email address to be notified when the item is open for pre-orders.

Pre-orders will generally be available once the freight arrival date in our warehouse has been confirmed. At this time, you will usually be able to make a pre-order and we will notify you once the item has arrived and it is ready for shipping.

What about kickstands?

Kickstands can add unnecessary weight and complexity to a child's bike. They can also get caught in the pedals as kids try to ride off, leading to potential falls and frustration.

However, standard kickstand mounts are fitted to all base bikes making it straightforward to fit a generic kickstand which can be purchased from any major bike retailer.

Bike assembly

We have made this super simple.

For base 16 and base 20, you will just need to attach the pedals and rotate and secure the handlebar.

We include the tools you will need and a bike manual describing these assembly instructions.

For base balance, you will need to attach the front wheel and rotate and secure the handlebars. We include the tools you need.
