Why Kids (& Parents) Love it

Easy to ride

With a low and stable geometry, a lightweight, kid-centric design, and the absence of a pedal brake to simplify balancing and starting, the base 16 is designed to be the easiest bike to ride.

This helps children learn to ride—and keeps more experienced riders happily riding for longer.

Lightweight, only 6.7 kg

At just 6.7 kg, the base 16 is an incredibly light children's bike. This makes it easy for kids to start, stop and control, boosting their confidence and reducing fatigue.

For four or five year olds, even a small difference in weight can significantly impact their confidence and enjoyment. Plus, it’s lighter for parents to carry!

No pedal / coaster brake

Equipped with two hand brakes instead of a pedal / coaster brake, the base 16 allows kids to backpedal for balance and to find the ideal starting pedal position.

Designed specifically for young kids

The base 16 is meticulously designed from the ground up to cater to the unique needs of young riders. It features a low, stable geometry, micro-reach brake levers, small hand grips, shorter cranks, and a narrow Q-factor.

This makes the bicycle much easier to push off, balance, control and stop. This means more enjoyable, safe and confidence-boosting rides.

Long lasting and durable

The base 16 is made with durable materials like stainless steel spokes with brass spoke-nipples, an aluminium frame and fork, a fully sealed bottom bracket with steel cups, and a semi-integrated threadless headset.

Combined with premium components like Tektro brakes, Kenda tyres, ProWheel cranks, and a KMC chain, the base 16 is made to last—perfect for passing down to younger siblings or reselling later on.

base bikes comes out swinging with all features: Light weight alloy frame, freewheel, low BB, short\small q-factor cranks, small diameter grips, threadless headset and easy pull Kids Tektro V brakes.

More Information

Detailed description

Frameset

Premium quality, ultra-lightweight 6061 grade Aluminium featuring a low centre of gravity for better balance, a long wheel base for increased stability, a gentle head angle for stable riding and plenty of room for kids to grow. The total bike weight, including the pedals, is 6.7 kg!

Wheels and Tyres

Super lightweight alloy rims with durable stainless steel spokes to prevent rust and Australian Standard compliant Cateye reflectors on each wheel.

Kenda Small Block 16*1.5 inch tyres with low rolling resistance and great for paved and light trail use.

Free wheeling rear hub

This bike features a free-wheeling rear wheel, without the counterintuitive pedal brake (commonly known as a 'coaster brake').

This allows children to easily adjust the pedals to the right starting position. It also enables back-pedaling for balance, and eliminates the risk of losing rear braking if the chain comes off, which is a key safety issue with back-pedal brakes.

Drivetrain

A sealed bottom bracket with steel cups for longevity, a Prowheel 26T chainwheel with double-sided chain guard and a KMC chain. A narrow q-factor (the horizontal distance between the pedals) and 90mm cranks to perfectly suit smaller bodies.

Overtime, all chains will stretch. We have included a chain tensioner to allow easy chain tightening and wheel alignment as the bikes are passed to siblings and friends.

Saddle

Child-proportioned with a lightweight alloy stem. The saddle can be adjusted forwards and backwards and the seat angle tilted, meaning maximum flexibility for growing children and the longest possible lifespan for growing kids on the bike.

The seat post also has a clear, minimum insertion line, and a rear Cateye reflector, to keep safety a priority.

Handlebars

50 cm wide for stable riding, black anodised for maximum durability, lightweight and adjustable, with a thinner 19 mm grip to suit little hands and the inclusion of a locking clamp to keep the grips safely in place.

A bell and front (and rear) Cateye reflectors are included and arrive already attached.

Headset and Stem

A NECO 28.6 mm threadless headset with sealed bearings for durability.

A lightweight stem with 40 mm extension and 3 degree rise.

Hand Brakes

The dual hand brakes are high quality Tektro J310 V-brakes front and rear with child friendly Tektro micro-reach JL-350 brake levers for maximum quality and longevity.

Base 16 - As it already says "Lightweight + Tough + Fun"

Bought base 16 for our 4 year old son from Cyclezone in Mooloolaba, QLD. What a good quality bike. Genuinely light weight for its size. My son had a little nation balance bike. I intorduced the base 16 with no pedals on day 1 to get his balance/handling in track with the new bike dynamics. Slapped the pedals on day 2 and literally within 10mins, he started pedalling away. I grew up riding bikes with no coaster brakes and have been looking for one for my little one. No regrets in the purchase. Yes, it is priced higher than the coaster model ones you can buy from 99bikes, but you are definitely getting a bike that will last its time and can be passed down to siblings. Job well done by the team at Base.Bikes. Would definitely recommend for friends' kids.

Thanks for taking the time to write such a thoughtful review! Pedalling away within ten minutes on day two is a great result — sounds like that first day getting comfortable with the bike paid off!

Thanks for choosing base bikes through Cyclezone, and for recommending us to other families. Enjoy the rides together!

The 16“ bike Australia Needs

We received our base 16 in May for our Son (3.5). He has come from a smaller balance bike and is now confidently pedalling and braking, the transition from the balance bike to this bike has been amazing. He was definitely on the side of only just being tall enough with the seat slammed but he is loving it.
Had a problem with pedals but Adam was quick to send out a replacement pair, service is great.
I am very happy with the overall build and quality of this bike, there are very limited options here in Australia and the fact that this is an Australian company delivering what we need is even better!
100% recommend for those looking for a good bike without a coaster, this is the bike kids NEED. Well done Adam and Co.

Hi Sam, thank you so much for your wonderful review! Sorry about the pedals and glad we could get you moving quickly! Cheers

Great First Bike

Bought as first bike for my daughter turning 4 - prompt delivery to regional NSW, super easy to put together and great adjustability with seat height and proximity to handlebars. Easy to use breaks for little hands and we love that there is no coaster breaking!

24h in and it's going fab! She's learnt how to pedal and stop with breaks already, an easy transition from a smaller balance bike.

No complaints so far, I expect this will grow with her and last a number of years!

Hi Fiona. Thanks so much! Pedalling and stopping independently within 24 hours is an amazing start. We’re thrilled the transition from her balance bike has been so smooth - that's absolutely the goal.

Here’s to many years of happy riding!

Love it

This bike is exactly what I was looking for (lightweight, removable pedals and no coaster brake) when I purchased my daughters first bike in early 2025. I considered importing a Woom but ended up settling for another bike (12in) until now when she needed a 16in. We recieved this yesterday and shes gone for two rides and absolutely loves it - especially how fast she can go. On her old bike she wasnt a fan of the coaster brake so always used the front hand brake which made me very nervous she'd flip. So she really loves the two hand brakes.

She is very petite for her age (5) at around 96cm and based on the calc on the website she was a tad small for 16in but shes been totally fine. Note she knew how to ride a bike so is fine on balls of feet/tip toes.

I would definately recommend this bike, I think itd be an excellent bike to learn on! Wish she'd been tall enough and the bike was around when she first started as i think she would have picked up riding even quicker.

Thanks so much for a detailed review Tabitha! You've clearly gone to a lot of effort to write this - we really appreciate it and its so helpful for other parents too! Thanks again

Unbelievable quality bikes

Wow. Buying a fantastic quality bike has seen our kids go from hating riding to gliding around tracks with absolute ease. Very similar to WOOM bikes we used recently in Copenhagen. Base bikes are exceptional quality and beautifully crafted. Watching our kids build a love for cycling now with such a gorgeous product, is worth every cent! People have stopped us while riding to ask if they’re worth it - 1000 times - YES.

Wow, thanks so much Jessica! The WOOM comparison is a huge compliment. Here's to a lifelong love of cycling for your kids :)

Super bike for our Grandson.

We bought this for our grandson’s 3rd birthday. He loved his balance bike but was beginning to ask each time he went out on it if he could have a peddle bike. He was so thrilled to get this bike. He chose the colour and was waiting eagerly. He did not hesitate to get on and take off though he did need us to help him coordinate everything on the first day. The second day he was away on his own and had mastered the break. The trickiest part for him has been taking off but on the third riding day he could even do this independently some of the time. It is a lovely bike and we expect it will last him a few good years as it is currently in the lowest position. It is a great fit for him as he can get his feet down easily and he was able to manage the bike easily push it along independently. He was a little obsessed with the bell. He continuously fiddled with it and it fell off. We lost an integral bit of it, and so he is currently riding without a working bell but this has been the only issue we have had since getting the bike. He loves his new bike!

So glad the bike is a great fit Donna, and thanks so much for taking the time to post such a comprehensive review! We'll pop some spare bells in the post for you!

Perfect for nervous rider

We have a 4 yesr old with motor planning and coordination issues. We needed a very lightweight bike that would take minimal effort to propel forwards, and that could take training wheels, and went for a Base bike. Rang Adam at base bikes to check the bike could take training wheels, and he was so helpful- even sent us a photo of the type of training wheels he knew would work. Our son loves his super cool green 16inch - he's quite tall (115cm) but it is perfect for him as he feels low to the ground and still plenty of room to pedal. He's refused to even try bikes in the past- we are practicing daily on this one, and can see that he will get there. Amazing!

Thanks so much for the review Yvette! This feedback is next level, and the photos are great! So glad the bike has been so helpful for your son. Cheers

After watching his older sister on her bike, our youngest was super keen to get riding. He picked up riding straight way on the base 16. Its so light! Thanks base bikes!

Miss 7: I love the colour, I love how fast it goes and how quickly I can stop. I just love everything!

Picked up riding almost immediately

We went with the balance bike method and had the pedals remove to begin with. I couldn't believe how easy he found it to learn on this bike! We could have the seat really low so he had no trouble starting off with his feet. He moved on to pedals within an hour!

Got this for my 4 year old as his first step up

Got this for my 4 year old as his first step up from a 12" toddler bike. Really impressed, nice and light, good components. Hand brakes without a coaster brake is a big step forward for bike handling skills.

Thanks so much for the review! Great to hear the lighter weight and component quality are standing out, and that the hand brakes with no back-pedal brake are helping with the move to a proper pedal bike. Hope he gets plenty of good riding out of it :)

A bike that brings the joy of riding & excellent customer service

My 4yo struggled on a hand-me-down heavy steel bike. She could ride it unaided but hated it and was easily defeated by any form of slope and headwind. She struggled with taking off due to coaster brakes and generally just didn't like riding. We bit the bullet and after researching decided to invest in a base bike. She got on it and immediately took off and didn't stop for almost 2 hours. She mastered taking off and stopping with the hand brakes within 20 minutes and the smile and joy of riding was there.

The quality looks great, it's light and the geometry supports the learning. My 2yo son is already eyeing it off. I suspect we'll be coming back to Base for the 20-inch model when she outgrows this one.

I initially got the wrong colour (according to her), but a simple phonecall to base and they organised the swap to a blue one through a local bike shop (shout out treadly cycles in norwood) which was effortless and done within the day. Amazing customer service from a solid local company.

Hi Pat

Thanks so much for sharing this. It’s exactly why we focus so heavily on low weight, child-specific geometry and proper hand brakes — the right bike can make riding feel completely different.

We’re glad the colour swap was easy too, and a big thanks to Treadly Cycles for helping us sort it so quickly. It sounds like the 16-inch bike may already have a future owner lined up when she moves to the 20-inch model!

Base Bikes are awesome!!

I got a Base Bike for my little 4 and half a year old boy the other day. It wasn't until I unwrapped the beautiful Base Bike from the box that I realised the quality my boy was missing out on with his first bike. From the second I saw it, I knew he would love it. The quality is quite remarkable.

I surprised him with it last weekend and we immediately went to the local Uni carpark to test it out. He took to it like a duck to water and the way he was able to pedal and manoeuvre the bike was remarkable. I had unintentionally held him back from realising a greater potential.

He absolutely loves it. We took it to the local pump track and he even had a go there! Conquering that is our next challenge to work through together.

One of my good friends recommended it to me and I'm so glad he did. Thanks Base Bikes, my boy loves his new bike!

Hi Richard, we're thrilled to hear your boy loves his new bike and that it’s helping him conquer new challenges! Thanks so much for the review! Wishing you many more adventures together and thanks to your good friend who recommended base bikes.

Great Investment Bike!

Once we got this bike, my son has not stopped using it! Still a bit fearful of using the pedals but within a day, he was balancing on it and maneuvering it around. I wish I found it sooner. The quality is superb even my son is comparing it to another bike I bought him and says this one has better wheels! My son is quite tall and has quickly outgrown his balance bike. A game changer in building his confidence. I have started recommending it to my friends.

Thanks Amy! We really appreciate you taking the time to write us a review :) So glad your son loves the bike.

As advertised - highly recommend

Purchased this for my 4yo as a birthday present. It is as advertised - lightweight, great quality, 4yo was cycling on his own within the minutes, transitioning from a balance bike.

Also, aesthetically pleasing. Can't ask for a better first bike. Not to forget, great customer service from Adam.

Only issue is, 4yo won't stop asking to go for a bike ride everyday now.

If you have been humming and hawing, just do it. You won't regret it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a positive review Joyce! We're really chuffed the bike is as promised!!

Amazing Quality

Have to say the customer service is exceptional! They always responded to query promptly and dealt with all issues in a friendly and welcoming manner.
Our 5 year old went from his balance bike to cycling away without any stabiliser under 5 minutes on the 16inch base bike. SO light weight, excellent quality. The little one feels In controls, brakes that fit his tiny hands so well.
We have moved from England and have been fans of Frog bikes and have been very impressed with base bikes now.
Well worth every penny. Thank you team and keep up your good work.
From very happy parents and Independent little cyclist :-)

Thanks so much for the review Vijitha! So glad you appreciate the quialty, especially after having experience with Frog bikes, which are another great kids bike brand!

Great light bike

Well thought out and light bike. My son (4.5 y.o.) loves riding his bright orange bike, he picked up pedal based riding within the first half-hour (after spending a year or more on balance bikes) and has only progressed rapidly from there. Rear freewheel is a game changer relative to rear-coaster brakes and has enabled rapid progression. We had no need for the optionally purchased balance wheels! Brakes work very well for little hands and after a few close calls with a bit too much applied braking power, he is now able to operate and modulate braking power as needed. Tires are grippy and able to take tight corners at speed. Time will tell on longevity of componentry but they all look well chosen, robust and fit for purpose. I have every confidence his younger brother will be learning to ride on the very same bike in just as short a period of time!

Thanks so much for the review BB! We really appreciate you taking the time to write a review and we're thrilled to hear your son made the switch from balance bike to pedal bike so quickly!

Great bike for learning

Our 3 year old absolutely loves her 16 inch bike. The quality is incredible, and she learnt to use the hand brakes on her first ride. Being able to back pedal is also a huge bonus so she can get started by herself everytime. The training wheels are very sturdy compared to her previous bike. Highly recommend, this bike is going to last us years.

It sounds like your three year old is really rhriving on the bike - so glad to hear it! Thanks so much for the review.

Great bikes

I ordered this for Christmas and the courier company initially lost the order, but Base Bikes scoured the country to find us a replacement in time for Christmas. Bike is a great combination of light weight, good geometry and nice components. It had our 4 year old riding confidently in just a few days even without previous balance bike experience. Brilliant product and great service. Absolutely worth it.

Thanks Liam! Yes, that was a tricky spot the courier left us in so close to Christmas. We're very relieved we could get a bike for you in the end, and so glad you're 4 year old is loving the bike!
