How to Teach a Kid to Ride a Bike

How to Teach a Kid to Ride a Bike

How to Teach Your Child to Ride a Bike Using the Balance Bike Method

Teaching your child to ride a bike is an exciting time! One of the most effective methods is to use the balance bike method. This means starting with a pedal bike but removing the pedals initially. This transforms the bike into a balance bike, allowing your child to focus on balance and coordination before introducing pedalling. This guide will take you through the steps to teach your child to ride confidently using this approach.

Don't forget to always use a properly fitted helmet for safety.

Why Use the Balance Bike Method?

This method simplifies the process of learning to ride a bike. Instead of juggling balance and pedalling simultaneously, your child can focus on one skill at a time.

  • Builds Balance First: By removing the pedals, the bike acts like a balance bike, letting your child master balance without distractions.
  • Reduces Fear: Kids can easily put their feet down when needed, helping them feel secure, in control and build confidence.
  • Smooth Transition: Once balance is mastered, adding the pedals back is an easy next step.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Balance Bike Method

Step 1: Prepare the Bike

Remove the pedals of the bike and lower the seat so your child can sit on the seat and have both feet flat on the ground.

Step 2: Choose the Right Location

Find a safe, open area like a park, footpath or bike path. Be sure to be away from traffic and pedestrians. A flat or very gently sloping surface is ideal.

Step 3: Walk the Bike

Have your child sit on the seat and encourage them to slowly walk it forward using their feet, like they would a balance bike. Practice braking. This helps them get comfortable with the bike and brakes.

Step 4: Practice Gliding

As your child gains confidence and can safely brake, encourage them to push off with their feet and lift their legs to glide. They’ll naturally start balancing as they build momentum. Ensure they use the brakes (not their feet) to stop.

Step 5: Introduce Steering

Once your child is gliding confidently, encourage them to turn or steer to learn how to control the bike.

Step 6: Add the Pedals

Once your child can balance, steer and brake comfortably, it’s time to reattach the pedals. Keep the seat low initially, so they can still touch the ground if needed. Encourage them to start pedalling slowly.

In this video, by removing the pedals from the base 16, the twins could practice their balance and build confidence on the bike without the complication of pedalling. When they were ready, the pedals were added back in and away they went!

Common Questions about the Balance Bike Method

How long does it take for a child to learn using this method?

The timeline varies. For kids already zipping around on a balance bike, they can take to a well fitted pedal bike very quickly. However, many kids will take a few sessions to learn how to ride a bike.

Do I need to hold the bike while they’re learning?

No, since your child can put their feet down anytime, they’ll feel secure and independent.

What do you think about kids bike lessons?

Some kids will benefit from having an expert to help them and formal teaching can be a great way to get your little one up and riding safely and with confidence. Ride a bike right is a local (Adelaide) bike school that offers a variety of lessons including online courses. They even have base bikes in their bike fleet!
